May You Be at Peace

Morning light streams through my office window, casting a warm glow over the quiet room. It’s early. I have my coffee mug in hand, and Genevieve, my poodle, curled up by my feet. It’s my favorite time of day.

I close my eyes and bring images of the people God has placed in my life come to mind. Silently, I name the first person…may he be happy, may he be well, may he be safe, may he be at peace. I repeat those phrases for each person on my mental list. Moving slowly through these prayers, I think about the meaning behind the simple words. Sometimes I elaborate—when I’m aware of specific circumstances in their lives I want to pray for—but most of the time, those words cover everything I want to say.

May ⸻ be at peace. The closing words feel weightier than the rest. I’m thankful that God doesn’t limit the number of requests I can bring to him, but if I had to prioritize, peace would rank highest.

Peace is a word rich in meaning. I don’t believe its meaning is merely a conflict-free life. Throughout the Bible, we can see that peace is synonymous with the presence of God. The peace of God is not dependent on circumstances. It’s an unshakeable faith and a knowledge that God is with us. We are not alone. The God who promises never to leave us is trustworthy. He is love. He is good. He is God of the universe, and he sees the bigger picture. He is our peace.

When I pray the words, May⸻be at peace, I’m asking God to reveal himself to that person in a way that makes those truths real to them.

Not everyone I pray for has a personal relationship with Jesus yet, but I continue to pray and know God hears my prayers. And those who have been close to God for years can still benefit from this prayer too. We all can.

“Jesus answered them, “Do you finally believe? In fact, you’re about to make a run for it—saving your own skins and abandoning me. But I’m not abandoned. The Father is with me. I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.” John 13:31-33 The Message

May you be at peace.

Amen.
