The One Truth You MUST Believe About God

“Honey, if you will do just one thing, I think you can be good at this.”

These were the words that came out of my husband’s mouth as we begin playing the fourth hole that day.

It was our anniversary, and we had decided to take a trip to a beautiful state park in our state. The weather was absolutely gorgeous on that fall day. And, my husband had suggested we try a game of golf.

I’d played a few times before, but never seriously.

And, on this day, I was playing terribly.

I would stand like he told me to stand; swing like he told me to swing, and I would follow through with all of my might. The ball would dribble down the fairway about 50 yards. Then, we would repeat the cycle. Again and again and again.

Finally, on that fourth hole, I was growing weary with it all. That’s when my very wise husband shared these words, “Honey, if you will do just one thing for me, I think you can be good at this.”

In fact, he went on to tell me that this one tip was really the “key” to all of golf. If I would consistently do this one thing, I would become a much better player.

His tip that day: keep your head down and your eyes on the ball.

Amazingly, his suggestion worked.

When I kept my head down and kept my eyes on that little white ball, I actually hit it into the air. I began to see the ball “fly” a little more that afternoon. The game became a lot more fun.

Just as there are “keys” and “main points” to the sports and the games that we play, there are “keys” and “main points” in the way we view God and all spiritual matters.

In previous weeks, we’ve suggested that each of us has a grid through which we look at life. We view God, Jesus, the Bible, other people, church, and significant life issues through this grid.

Today, I’d like to take that concept a little further and suggest that there are some great truths about spiritual matters upon which all of the other truths rest. These are the foundational truths of the gospel and the rock bed of the Bible.

So, what is this great truth that you and I must believe about God?

Join us as we take a clear and practical look at some of the most basic and essential tenants of the Christian life – the doctrines of the faith.

Each week, we will highlight and explain a core doctrine. Then, we will pose the question, “Why does this matter to you and me?”

You can catch all of this year’s “Delight in Doctrine” posts by clicking HERE.

For the purposes of the study, our main texts will be first, the Bible, of course, and Wayne Grudem’s classic, Systematic Theology:  An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine.

It is our prayer that by the end of 2017, we will all find more delight in understanding what we believe and why we believe it.
