6 Daily Affirmations to Bring Calm to an Anxious Heart

“What you say always produces some kind of harvest. What is the lasting legacy of your words?” –Paul David Tripp

I can still remember my fourth-grade teacher telling me I was a good writer.  I had never thought about myself that way, not until that moment.  I believed her when she said it because I respected her. I’m thankful Mrs. Larson took the time to encourage me the way she did.  It had a lasting impact.  Today, I’m a writer, doing exactly what I love most.  She probably had something to do with that.

I also remember the negative words that people have said.  Those are hard to forget.

I’m sure that it’s not hard for you to think of examples, both good and bad, of how someone else’s words have impacted your life.

Words are powerful.

The Proverbs are full of guidance on the wisdom of guarding our mouths and what comes out of them.  Here are a few examples:

Proverbs 18:4 “A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.”

Proverbs 16:24 “Kind words are like honey–sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”

Proverbs 25:18 “Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow.”

Even more powerful than the words that others say to us, are the words we say to ourselves.  We may not say the words out loud, but they’re there…and they count.

What kinds of words are you speaking to yourself?

What we say to ourselves really tells us what we believe, what’s in our heart.

If you are a follower of Christ, the words you say to yourself need to reflect the truth of what God says about you.

To know what God says about you, go to the right source.  Go to the Bible.

I’ve been doing some studying about the power of affirmations to start the day off for success.  The reasons affirmations work is because they’re statements of what we believe, which prompts us to take action on those beliefs.

Sometimes it takes a long time to get from belief to action.  Faith is required.

For example, fear and worry played a big part in my past.  I’ve come a long way in learning to let go of those feelings that were holding me back because I learned to trust God.  The more I learned to trust God, the more I believed his words in the Bible, words like:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  John 14:27

I can look at those words and change them into an affirmation that I know is true because it came from God.  I can say,

I have peace.  My heart isn’t troubled.  I’m not afraid.  (Thanks to Jesus)

The first time we say some biblical affirmations, they may not feel true at all.  But feelings aren’t always to be trusted. We can know they’re true if God said them over his people- and if you’re a follower of Christ, you’re one of his people.

Have you ever turned God’s promises for you into affirmations?

I’ve created a PDF sheet, below, that you can print off, that you’re welcome to use.  If you’re someone who struggles with fear, then these affirmations are for you.  You can also use it as an example of how to write affirmations, based on scripture, to focus on other areas of your life that you need help with.

I’ve used The Message paraphrase of the Bible for this purpose.  I love to switch around and read different versions because I often gain additional insights when I do so.

In preparing to write this post, I found a resource on this topic that's too good not to share.  I found a book called, The Power of Words and the Wonder of God at Desiring God.  John Piper and Justin Taylor are the general editors of this collection of essays.  It's available as a free PDF download, HERE. If you want to delve deeper into this topic of biblical affirmations, I highly recommend the book.

A closing prayer:

Father, we pray that we'll let no corrupt word proceed out of our mouths, but only such a word as is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. (Eph. 4:29)
