By His Spirit, We Can Trust

In chapter one, I wrote about what trusting God looks like, and about the foundation of that trust, which is a faith in the gospel of what Jesus has done for us. I talked about why even the ability and the desire to believe in the gospel is gift from the Holy Spirit. We can’t muster that up on our own. Once we accept those gifts and decide to live in relationship with God, trusting and loving him, he sees us as holy, as part of his family. That’s what it means to be a Christian. And we are changed when that happens, with new desires.

Pope Francis was referring to Jeremiah 17:7-8, which says.

Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. One of my smart friends said that last summer. No expectations? Hmm…that’s not the usual way I operate. I’m a planner, an organizer, a goal setter, and if I’m being honest, a bit of a bull dog when it comes to getting what I want. I grab onto something and don’t let go- until it goes my way. There’s certainly a place for those attributes, when applied appropriately, but what I want even more than getting my own way, is for God to be able to do what he wants in my life.

Trusting in the Lord, with all of our hearts, will be the theme of this blog. I have long known this portion of scripture to be true. I’m someone who grew up in church, who knows a lot of "right" answers when it comes to sounding like a Christian. The truths of the Christian faith have been in my head for a long time. But just because something is in my head, doesn’t mean it has worked its way into my heart. Only the Holy Spirit can do that work. I've been learning to trust in Jesus throughout my life and I’ve experienced the blessings of what happens when I do.
